Baptist Theological Seminary

Cali, Colombia

Brief History

The Baptist Theological Seminary in Cali Colombia was considered one of the outstanding seminaries in Latin America having distinguished missionaries serving as president and faculty members. Following the departure of the missionaries, the seminary was at the pointing of closing its doors after much prayer the decision was made to continue the work, utilizing local pastors as professors (teaching without financial remuneration) and after a time Pablo Moreno was elected as president. In light of this, the seminary is facing significant challenges related to the task of elevating the academic level of their professors, finding financial resources to function and to increase their extensions, and strengthening the ministry of the churches in their Colombian Baptist Convention. Ever since this seminary entered into a partnership with Southwestern Seminary, it has grown from 70 to over 900 students.

The following is a list ofpossible projects that the leadership of the Champion Church and the Colombian Baptist Theological Seminary can dialog with the purpose of strengthening the work of the seminary and even make a greater impact in the training of leaders for ministry in Colombia and other Latin American countries. A visit by the pastor of the Champion Church will be of great help to reach agreements and work on details of the activities that they suggest for implementation.

Projects Related to Faculty Development

E

As we have mentioned previously, the members of the faculty are pastors and church staff persons who are doing a fantastic job of training the students who enroll in the seminary. The President, Pablo Moreno, is setting the example by sacrificially working on his PhD in a local university.

E

Scholarships provided by Champion Churches for faculty members will be of great help. In an effort to respond to this need, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary has designed the following study programs:

    • Master in Theological Studies — Totally in Spanish and totally online. The total cost of this degree is the fantastic price $1 ,600, which consists of 12 courses that the professors can take without leaving Colombia.
    • A PhD in World Christian Studies that requires only 3 weeks on the Southwestern campus every year. Southwestern seminary is in the position of offering this degree in Spanish with Spanish-speaking professors serving as the mentors for the doctoral candidates.

Projects Related to Students

E

In light of the limited resources, some key students with great leadership potential in the Colombian Baptist Convention could benefit from receiving scholarships provided by Champion Churches.

E

Church Planting Projects involving students from the Cali Seminary in collaboration with the Colombian Baptist Convention and volunteers from the Champion Church could be involved in starting churches.

Projects Related to the Campus

E

When the pastor of the Champion Church visits the Cali campus, he can become informed about additional projects in which his church can become involved perhaps in renovating some of the classrooms.

E

Other projects could include the purchase Of electronic equipment for the central campus as well as for the extensions such as data projectors, white boards, laptop computers, etc.

E

The Cali Seminary is already offering online courses. These, however, are costing a lot of money due to the fact that it is depending on a company to operate the computer program.

E

In collaboration with Southwestern Seminary, Trinity Academic can make available to this Seminary an electronic portal that will enable the seminary to offer online courses, virtual courses and an untold number of library resources to the students. A Champion Church can assist by providing the initial cost of installing this system and the very affordable cost to maintain thus saving the Seminary thousands of dollars in equipment and local personnel to maintain it.

Projects Related to the Extension of the Cali Seminary

E

The Cali Seminary in a sacrificial manner has started extensions in other cities to provide an opportunity for students who cannot go to the central campus to obtain a theological education where they are located. One of these extensions is with an indigenous group taught in their own language.

E

At this moment financial resources are urgently needed to provide for the cost of travel, lodging and meals for the professors who go to teach courses in the extensions

E

The Cali seminary is in a position to start extensions in other strategic places and even in other countries (like Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador) but it needs the financial resources to accomplish this objective. The Cali Seminary has recaptured the vision of being an International Seminary and with the appropriate resources this dream can become a reality.

Conclusion

This is simply a list of some possible in which a Champion Church could become involved during a 5 year period with the Cali Seminary. As we stated previously, once an initial visit takes places and there is the opportunity to dialog, decisions can be made regarding the projects that are selected (perhaps some that are suggested by the leadership of the Champion Church) and priorities are established.
