Baptist Theological Seminary

Panama

Brief History

In 2010 the Panama Baptist Theological Seminary entered into a strategic partnership with Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary through its Global Theological Innovation program. At the time of the initiation of the partnership the Panamanian Seminary had 8 students. Today it has over 60 students in its central campus and the extensions that it has started. The leadership of the seminary and its faculty have a very strong commitment and a clear vision to train many people for ministry. It proposes to do this through the implementation of the following projects:

Projects Involving a Champion Church/Partner

E

The pastor of the Champion Church could go to Panamanian to teach intensive (week-long) courses and workshops in areas of study that are urgently needed in Panama today.

E

Members of the Champion Church could go and participate together with the seminary students in projects related to evangelism, discipleship, ministry, Vacation Bible School, etc.

E

Key members of the Champion Church could go to the Seminary in Panamanian with practical information such as how to maintain a server, how to offer online courses, etc.

Projects Related to the Faculty Development

E

The members of the faculty are pastors and church staff persons who are doing a fantastic job of training the students who enroll in the seminary. The President, Sofia Tejada, is setting the example by sacrificially working on a Masters Degree from Southwestern Seminary.

E

Scholarships provided by Champion Churches for faculty members will be of great help. In an effort to respond to this need, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary has designed the following study programs:

a. Master in Theological Studies — Totally in Spanish and totally online. The total cost of this degree is the fantastic price $1 ,600, which consists of 12 courses that the professors can take without leaving Panama.

b. A PhD in World Christian Studies that requires only 3 weeks on the Southwestern campus every year. Southwestern seminary is in the position of offering this degree in Spanish with Spanish-speaking professors serving as the mentors for the doctoral candidates.

Projects Related to Students

E

In light of the limited resources, some key students with great leadership potential in the Panamanian Baptist Convention could benefit from receiving scholarships provided by Champion Churches.

E

Church Planting Projects involving students from the Panamanian Seminary in collaboration with the Panamanian Baptist Convention and volunteers from the Champion Church could be involved in starting churches.

Projects Related to the Campus

E

When the pastor of the Champion Church visits the Panamanian campus, he can become informed about additional projects in which his church can become involved perhaps in renovating some of the classrooms.

E

Other projects could include the purchase of electronic equipment for the central campus as well as for the extensions such as data projectors, white boards, laptop computers, etc.

E

In collaboration with Southwestern Seminary, Trinity Academic can make available to this Seminary an electronic portal that will enable the seminary to offer online courses, virtual courses and an untold number of library resources to the students. A Champion Church can assist by providing the initial cost of installing this system and the very affordable cost to maintain thus saving the Seminary thousands of dollars in equipment and local personnel to maintain it.

E

Acquire three (3 (Laptops and Data Projectors to use in three classrooms.

E

Equip the Seminary with the necessary resources to offer online courses.

E

Have the personnel to provide the technical support for this system.

E

Install a digitized library with the necessary equipment for the reproduction of materials.

E

Have adequate furniture for the work that the faculty and students do at the library. (air conditioner, chairs and tables and two PC sets)

Projects Related to the Seminary Extensions

E

The Panama Seminary in a sacrificial manner has started extensions in other cities to provide an opportunity for students who cannot go to the central campus to obtain a theological education where they are located. One of these extensions is with an indigenous group taught in their own language.

E

At this moment financial resources are urgently needed to provide for the cost of travel, lodging and meals for the professors who go to teach courses in the extensions

Conclusion

Through its graduates and its extensions, this seminary is seriously involved in reaching unreached people groups in the jungles of the Darien province with Choco and Guaymi tribal groups in addition to reaching the Cuna Indians in the San Blas Islands. Being in the most culturally diverse country in Latin America, this Panamanian has great potential in training people to make significant strides in fulfilling the Great Commission.
